Diabetes medicines
NIH notes chromium may increase insulin sensitivity and add to metformin and other diabetes drugs. The Linus Pauling Institute advises close glucose monitoring when alpha-lipoic acid is combined with diabetes medicines. NCCIH says berberine is studied for diabetes and that anyone on medicines should consult a provider. With banaba and ginseng also in the blend, FitSpresso stacks several glucose-lowering ingredients. See FitSpresso and blood sugar.
Thyroid medicine
A small study found chromium picolinate taken with levothyroxine reduced its absorption over six hours. Ask your doctor how far apart to take them; many people take levothyroxine on waking, on an empty stomach.
Antibiotics and penicillamine
NIH advises taking quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after zinc, and separating penicillamine from zinc by at least 1 hour.
Blood thinners and surgery
Resveratrol inhibits platelet aggregation and NCCIH notes ginseng may interfere with clotting. If you take anticoagulants or antiplatelets, or are due for surgery or dental work, talk to your doctor.
Transplant and other CYP3A4 drugs
NCCIH reports berberine interacts with cyclosporine. The Linus Pauling Institute notes resveratrol inhibits CYP3A4, which could raise levels of cyclosporine, tacrolimus, some statins, calcium channel blockers and amiodarone.
Nadolol and stimulants
NCCIH notes high doses of green tea can reduce nadolol levels. Any caffeine in the green tea extract adds to coffee, energy drinks and stimulant medicines.
Prescription weight-loss medicines
The FDA’s Wegovy announcement states it should not be used with other weight-loss products, including herbal products. See FitSpresso vs Ozempic.
Other supplements
Avoid doubling up on chromium and zinc (common in multivitamins), berberine, alpha-lipoic acid, green tea, cinnamon or bitter melon. Keep total zinc under 40 mg a day.
